‘Dark Knight Rises’: How Much Will ‘Knightfall’ Factor In?

The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at the comic inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film.

Throughout his tenure as the commander of the big-screen Batman, Christopher Nolan, along with writing partners Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, have pulled selectively from the vast library of books for inspiration in the films. “Batman Begins” borrowed a handful of elements from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” while “The Dark Knight” took some character notes from “The Long Halloween.”

When it was announced that Bane would make his triumphant return as a respectable villain in the finale, “The Dark Knight Rises,” comic books fans were just as quick to shout “Knightfall,” in reference to the trilogy of stories that played out during 1993 and 1994. It appeared Nolan and company had found their inspiration, but what exactly would they use from those books?

Bane
The masked villain was the clear giveaway to “Knightfall” ‘s presence as an influence, and it’s clear why. Bane only showed up on the DC Comics scene four months before the beginning of the “Knightfall” story line, and once the show got on the road, he made his introduction count. As he appears to be in “The Dark Knight Rises,” the Bane of the comics was a hyper-intelligent behemoth of a man, capable of besting Bruce Wayne.

Prison Break
Part of Bane’s plan in gaining the upper hand over Batman involved releasing all of Arkham Asylum’s worst inmates on the city. Batman wears himself down, rounding up the likes of the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy, and this series of bouts leaves him severely weakened when he finally has to face off against Bane in the Batcave, leading to the most significant scene from “Knightfall.”

The Break
If Bane is remembered for anything, it is the central moment of “Knightfall” when he takes a physically and mentally exhausted Bruce Wayne and breaks his back with a knee to the spine. It was a critical blow in more than one sense of the word and significantly changed the shape of the Batman titles for years to come. The scant footage we have actually seen from “The Dark Knight Rises” hints that Christian Bale‘s Bruce Wayne does suffer some similar injury during the course of the film. He appears to be walking with a cane, and while we can’t conclusively blame Bane, the timing sure is something!

Catwoman
Selina Kyle’s appearance in both “Knightfall” and “The Dark Knight Rises” most likely is a coincidence, since her role in the former is not terribly significant. It does matter, however, that she attempts to help Bruce Wayne with his paralysis, demonstrating that there are many facets to her allegiances.

The New Batman
While Bruce Wayne was on the mend thanks to Bane’s handiwork, a new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley, took up the cowl in his absence. Since the tag line of “The Dark Knight Rises” leaves little doubt that the “legend ends” with this final movie, fans have been pondering whether the new film will mean the death of Bruce Wayne. If that’s the case, the symbol would have to live on. A new Dark Knight would have to rise.

Nina Dobrev Understands Elena’s Decision On ‘Vampire Diaries’

‘Diaries’ star tells MTV News about her character’s game-changing decision on Thursday night’s season finale.
By Jocelyn Vena

The “Vampire Diaries” season finale Thursday night answered some questions (like which Salvatore brother Elena wanted), but also posed a bunch more.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

As the episode, titled “The Departed,” came to a close, a tear-filled Elena told Damon that while she cared for him, her one true love is his good-guy brother, Stefan.

“I understand why she made the decision,” Nina Dobrev told MTV News at the launch of the “Like Her, Like Me” Seventeen magazine campaign where she debuted her “got milk?” ad about her character Thursday night in New York. “I respect her decision, and I think, having seen the last three years, what’s happened in her life, everyone will also. They may not be happy, half the people will not be happy regardless, but they’ll get it, and it’s her decision at the end of the day.”

And, the drama didn’t end there: After Elena broke the news to Damon, she and her friend Matt drove off the same bridge her parents did years before, their car sinking into the river.

Much like that other time, Stefan plunges into the water to save her, except she sacrifices herself to save her pal. Cut to the very last second of the episode, where her dead body lies still while Stefan looks on, mourning her loss. But, nothing is what it seems, and her eyes open. Little did anyone know, she had vampire blood in her, courtesy of Dr. Meredith Fell, from a previous injury.

Dobrev said “it doesn’t matter” what she thinks Elena should have done, adding, “I have absolutely no say in who she chooses or how that all goes down. That’s a Julie Plec question.”

Well, Plec, the show’s executive producer, said that for Elena, life as a vampire is a distinct possibility. “The ending had been in the works for about two years,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It felt like now was the time — when you’re left with no grownup, no adult supervision, no parent, no guardian — for Elena to experience the next evolution of her journey.”

Over the course of season three, Elena certainly faced a number of hardships, including the loss of her mentor, vampire hunter Alaric. “All the stuff that we did with having her get stronger over the course of the year, training and getting in touch with her physical self, and all the grief and all the emotion that she went through, all the compassion that she has for everybody, it will all play into next year and what kind of person and vampire she will actually be — if she should choose to see the transition through,” Plec explained.

So, will she transition? The executive producer noted, “There will be a discussion to be had about it at the beginning, but the road we’re going down is pretty balls out.”

Assortment of Nifty New Images from the Van Damme Actioner 6 Bullets

This one slipped under my radar, folks, and I apologize. However, I don’t think I’ve missed anything too important, thought that’s really no excuse, now is it? What’s more, I think I’m in danger of losing my fanboy card, which I obviously can’t live without. Below you’ll find a batch of images from the upcoming Jean-Claude Van Damme action/thriller “6 Bullets”, a motion picture about a guy who specializes in finding missing children. One guess who Van Damme plays. An official synopsis. It’s not really that informative: An ex-mercenary known for finding missing children is hired by a mixed martial arts fighter whose daughter has been kidnapped. See? Not a lot of information there. “6 Bullets”, which also stars Joe Flanigan and Bianca Bree, opens in the US this July. DVD? Blu-ray? VOD? Select theaters? I’m not sure. I’m sure we’ll learn more as the month draws closer. The images, meanwhile, have been situated below

BFI, U.K. Government Announce Increased Film Funding, Plans To Reward Success

The British Film Institute today laid out its five-year plan for the future of UK film funding and how it proposes to invest an expected total of £273M in Lottery money from 2012-2017. The org said £28.2M will go towards supporting British film on an annual basis, including an increase in production and development funds of 30% over the next five years. At the same time, the UK government has announced steps it’s taking to bolster the UK biz. Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said the British Film Commission will create a strategic partnership with the UK Trade & Investment body and the BFI to provide an additional £400,000 to the BFC’s budget. The announcements were made today in response to a UK film policy review that was published in January and which notably called for a “reward for success” scheme. The idea being that BFI development funds should be returned to companies who’ve used them successfully and then be reinvested in future projects. The BFI has confirmed that Lottery investment will be restructured to reward success while the government said the group will set up a cross-industry task force charged with examining ways in which the business can reduce overall dependency on public funding. The BFI also said it intends to put a development emphasis on such genres as animation, comedy, documentaries, family films and international co-productions. Promoting diversity, the org is also eyeing a … Read More »

Russell Brand To Host 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Two-time VMA host will lead the festivities Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Actor, comedian and two-time Video Music Awards emcee Russell Brand will be your host for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards when they air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The star of the upcoming film “Rock of Ages” will lead the fan-voted awards, which celebrate the year’s biggest films.

“MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life,” Russell Brand said of his hosting gig.

Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer for the show, spoke with MTV News about Brand and why he was a clear choice as host. “First of all, I think Russell’s the perfect host for this show,” said Ignjatovic, who previously worked with Brand during his two stints hosting the VMAs. “He’s a movie star. He’s probably one of the most brilliant stand-ups that I’ve seen in his time, and he’s a rock star.”

And it’s that rock-and-roll attitude that Ignjatovic said will play an important role in this year’s show, which will highlight the ties between music and film with performances from groups like Fun.

Ignjatovic added that Brand’s ability to riff off the unscripted moments in the show really excites him. “Whatever we end up creating around him within the show, he brings that danger thing as well,” Ignjatovic said. “We’d love for the show to live there, where you don’t know how he’s going to react to something in the moment. He’s so sharp and witty and on his game that that’s an exciting place to live.”

But when it really comes down to it, what makes Brand the right host, according to Ignjatovic, is his comedy.

“He has amazing comedic chops. He’s brilliant. He touches all of the areas that I think are important to us,” he said. “Add to that I think he’s one of the most professional people I’ve worked with in terms of comedians. He’s well-studied and very dedicated to his craft. I think we’re very fortunate that he said ‘yes.’ ”

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Neil Marshall Boards The Last Voyage of the Demeter

It seems like Millennium Films has been trying to get Bragi Schut’s decades-old script “The Last Voyage of the Demeter”, yet another “re-imagining” of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” tale, made for, well, a decade or two. Horror reboot mastermind Marcus Nispel was originally attached to direct the project, but that was way back in 2009. He eventually left. By 2010, suddenly hot “Dragon” girl Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley were attached to star, but that was back in 2010, and who knows if they’re still attached. Then as early as early 2011, “30 Days of Night’s” David Slade tried his hand on the project. He, too, has since left. The latest name attached to the long-sailing (get it?) Dracula film is the master of splatter himself, Neil Marshall (“The Descent”, “Doomsday”). Of course, whether Marshall’s attachment actually results in the film happening is anybody’s guest. Originally written by Schut (“Season of the Witch”), “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” takes another
